Bookmobile Service at the Stoney Creek Arena and Gage Park is unavailable on Saturday, June 3, due to the Battle of Stoney Creek re-enactment at Battlefield Museum. The Bookmobile will visit Bayfront Park (10am-12pm) and the Imagine in the Park Festival (10:30am-4:30pm) as special pop-ups instead.

Summer Reading Buddies

(Youth Opportunity, 14 and older or completion of Grade 8)

If you are interested in volunteering for the 2023 Summer Reading Buddies program, complete the online volunteer application form before or on Monday, June 5, 2023.

Program Overview

Summer Reading Buddies Volunteers help children who have finished Grades one through six to continue reading throughout the summer. The program runs during July and August and encourages reluctant readers to enjoy reading through educational board games and activities.

Time Commitment

1-1.5 hours twice a week
Volunteering starts the week of July 3 and ends August 18

Qualifications

Speak and write English well
Experience and/or interested in working with children and literacy
Able to work with children on a one to one basis as well as in a group environment
Act as a good role model for children

Be reliable, patient and trustworthy
Compliant with HPL’s Mandatory Workplace COVID-19 Vaccination Verification Policy.
All volunteers ages 18 and over must provide a recent Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check

Responsibilities

Attend an orientation session before the start of the program
Meet with children registered in the program at a HPL Branch at a set time weekly
Help children with their reading
Participate in educational games and activities
Provide positive feedback and encouragement

Follow the Library’s Code of Conduct at all times
