All the latest updates on building and renovation projects at HPL.

Discovery Centre 

Hamilton Public Library (HPL), the City of Hamilton's Indigenous Relations Division and Lord Cultural Resources are exploring the redevelopment of the former Canadian Marine Discovery Centre through the creation of a new library branch, Indigenous gathering space, cultural heritage exhibition space, café, and visitor amenities.

Valley Park Branch Improvement Project 

As of September 2023, the Valley Park Branch has earned a LEED Gold Certification.

Mount Hope Branch Renovation Project

The Hamilton Public Library Board has agreed to take $1 million from its capital projects reserve fund to help pay for the renovation and an updated design of the Mount Hope Branch. The Branch relocated to its current location at the front of the Mount Hope Community Hall at 3027 Homestead Drive. 

Barton Branch Renovation Update 

From March 1-3, 2023, the Barton Branch was closed for renovations. The Branch's makeover included fresh paint to brighten up the space and new carpet in the Children's area and lounge area. The Information area saw the install of two new ergonomic Information Desks, an ergonomic Page check-in station, a closed storage unit for Staff materials, and a stylish shelving unit for Members' holds.

Carlisle Branch Construction Updates

Hamilton's Public Library's new Carlisle Branch at 277 Carlisle Rd., is now open. Come see the new features including a children's department alongside our wide range of library collections and services.

Kenilworth Branch Improvements

The Kenilworth Branch was temporarily closed Monday October 23 to Wednesday October 25, 2023 for a mini makeover. Renovations include improvements to the 1st Floor layout, new service desks and public computer tables, as well as a Makerspace on the 2nd Floor. Before and after photos to come. 

Valley Park Branch Public Art Mural

The mural is vibrant, full of local nature and has a feeling of discovery. It represents diverse members of the community, physical activity and promotes a healthy relationship with nature. It exemplifies a commitment to sustainability, welcomes all members of the community and has a strong visual impact from a distance and up close.

Waterdown Branch Makerspace Update

The Waterdown Branch’s newly expanded Makerspace is now open. Digitize your memories from VHS to DVD, print large-scale promotional posters on the large format printer, or watch your 3D creations come alive with the 3D printer. Learn to sew or embroider with the sewing and embroidery machines, or design special greeting cards with the Cricut Explore 3 machine. Create cool buttons for your backpacks and lanyards using the 1.5” button maker. 

Central Library Children's Area Renovation

Renovations of Central Library's 1st floor Children's Area began on March 30, 2026. A temporary Children's Area pop-up is currently available on the 2nd floor on the northeast side by the Piano Room. Members may browse multi-lingual collections, play with train sets, and enjoy their favourite early literacy programming.
