Reproduction Requests

Local History and Archives holds a unique collection of over three million images chronicling the history of Hamilton and surrounding areas, dating from the mid-1800s. High-resolution digital copies are available for purchase for personal and commercial use.

Formats and fees

  • Non-commercial use: $25 per item, plus tax. For artistic, educational, or personal projects that will not be marketed, promoted, or sold — such as personal research, personal or non-profit websites, home decor, or gifts.
  • Commercial use: $45 per item, plus tax. For images intended for resale, advertising, or other revenue-generating uses — such as books for sale (including textbooks and academic publications), journals with paid subscriptions, or commercial websites.

Files are normally provided as JPEGs at up to 600 dpi; TIFF files at up to 1200 dpi are available on request. Images can be delivered by email or on USB, to be picked up in person at Central Library. Print reproductions are not available, but you can print large-format images at our Library Makerspaces.

How to order

  1. Download and complete a Digital Reproduction Order Form
  2. Submit the signed form by email to askhpl@hpl.ca (preferred) or in person at the Local History and Archives information desk at Central Library.
  3. Pay the invoice we issue. Orders must be paid in full before files are released. Payments can be made by Visa, Mastercard, or debit card at Central Library, or over the phone once the invoice is issued.
  4. Receive your files. Orders typically take 7 to 14 days to complete. Large orders, or images that are not already digitized, may take longer.

Copyright and use restrictions

Receiving a reproduction is not the same as receiving permission to publish it. It is your responsibility to determine and satisfy copyright and other use restrictions — such as donor restrictions, privacy rights, publicity rights, licensing and trademarks — when using, publishing, or distributing materials received from Hamilton Public Library. Additional fees set by a copyright or intellectual property owner may apply and would be negotiated directly with them.

Copying materials yourself

During a visit, you’re welcome to photograph materials with your own camera (flash disabled) for personal or research use, subject to preservation and copyright considerations. Please check with staff before photocopying. Personal digital scanners are not permitted.
