Remembrance Month

This November, join Hamilton Public Library in remembering those who served Canada in times of war, conflict and peace. Explore their stories through books, films and programs, and visit HPL’s Poppy Project, a community tribute created stitch by stitch.

HPL’s Poppy Project

Over 10 months in 2026, HPL Staff, Knitting Club participants and Community Members knitted and crocheted 637 poppies for HPL’s Poppy Project.

Their contributions came together in a wreath, with a handmade banner, honouring lives lost in wartime. The red poppies honour soldiers who died, while the purple poppies honour animals that served and died during war.

Visit the wreath on display in Central Library’s Jackson Square Lobby. Thank you to everyone who contributed their time and talents to this shared act of remembrance.

Remembrance Day — November 11

At 11am on Wednesday, November 11, all HPL locations will observe a minute of silence to honour those who served and remember those who lost their lives. Please silence your mobile devices during this time of reflection.

Join us at Central Library’s Living Room from 11–11:45am for Live Music at Central: Remembrance Day, featuring bagpipes performed by Private Paul Officer. All ages are welcome.

Indigenous Veterans Day — November 8

Indigenous Veterans Day honours the contributions and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Veterans. Take time to learn about their military service and the experiences of Indigenous people who served Canada.

Read, Watch and Learn

Explore Canada’s wartime history and the experiences of those who served, both overseas and at home, through HPL’s Remembrance Month programs and curated collections:

Learn about the Ontario Farmerettes, high-school-aged girls who planted and harvested crops to help feed troops and civilians. Their stories are shared in Onion Skins and Peach Fuzz: Memories of Ontario Farmerettes and the documentary We Lend a Hand.
