Missing: Red Dress Exhibit

May 1 – 15, 2024
Central Library, 1st Floor Living Room

A visual display of 21 red dresses bearing the stories of 12 victims is a symbolic representation of the all-too many Indigenous women and girls in Canada harmed by violence.

The Exhibit provides an opportunity for the Hamilton community to come together in reflection and solidarity to end the national crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and LGBTQ2S+ people.

A special ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 1, Noon-12:30pm, in honour of the upcoming National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) held each year on May 5.

A minute of silence will be observed at Central Library at 12:30pm on May 5, 2024 (Please note, select HPL branches open at 1pm on Sundays).

Exhibit music courtesy of Natasha Findlay-Clairmont and Christina Barahona.

The exhibit has been installed by the City’s Indigenous Relations team in partnership with the Hamilton Public Library. Visit www.hamilton.ca/IndigenousRecognition for more information on MMIWG2S Day, held each year on May 5, and Hamilton’s commitment to advancing Truth and Reconciliation through the ongoing implementation of its locally focused Urban Indigenous Strategy.

Explore HPL’s collections to learn the stories of Indigenous women, girls, two- spirit and gender-diverse people in Canada who are missing or murdered.
